Welcome to Artist Swapan Das
Swapan Das now in his late thirties, has become one of the best exponents of Indian painting. The neo-Bengal School that Abanindranath Tagore and his students has started had shown signs of decadence in the 1950-60s period. Than certain dedicated artist like Mrinal Kanti Das gave it a new thematic variations and directions. His student, particularly Swapan, took up from him pointers to the aesthetic adventure and went their own way. Both in wash and tempera swapan has done miniature format works, medium size ones and muralesque painting with same kind of ease, accuracy, and meticulousness. Swapan is a religious painter but believes that good religious art must be good art first and also true expression of inner experience of the artist. He pours himself out in all aspects of the subject matter, composition and the meanings communicated. In this exhibition one sees him moving slightly away from world of mythology to the life of Buddha. The first result of his meditations on Buddha is the culminating point of this exhibition and indicates his quest for meaning of life and art.
